Meta has officially entered the nuclear arms race—literally. On Friday, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram announced it has signed a trio of agreements with nuclear energy providers Vistra, Oklo, and TerraPower, securing a staggering 6.6 gigawatts (GW) of potential capacity to power its hungry AI data centers.


The deal, which sent nuclear stocks soaring on Friday morning, is arguably the most aggressive move yet by a tech giant to solve the "AI energy crunch." Unlike competitors who have signed one-off reactor deals, Meta is diversifying its bet across established utilities and futuristic startups.


The "Nuclear Trinity"
Meta’s strategy involves a mix of immediate power from existing plants and long-term bets on next-generation technology.

Vistra (The "Now" Power): Meta has signed a 20-year agreement to purchase electricity from Vistra’s existing nuclear fleet, specifically the Davis-Besse and Perry plants in Ohio and Beaver Valley in Pennsylvania. This deal also funds "uprates" (technical upgrades) to squeeze more juice out of these aging reactors immediately.


Oklo (The "Altman" Connection): In a deal with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s nuclear startup, Meta will back a new 1.2 GW "power campus" in Pike County, Ohio. Oklo plans to deploy its fast-fission "Aurora" powerhouses here, with the first phase targeted for 2030.


TerraPower (The "Gates" Bet): Meta is also funding Bill Gates’ TerraPower to develop two "Natrium" reactors, capable of generating 690 MW by 2032. The contract includes rights to six future units, potentially adding another 2.1 GW by 2035.


Feeding "Prometheus"
Why does Meta need 6.6 GW of power (enough to light up 5 million homes)? The answer lies in Ohio. The bulk of this energy is destined for "Prometheus," Meta’s new AI supercluster in New Albany, Ohio.

The Supercluster: Prometheus is a 1-gigawatt AI training facility expected to come online later in 2026.

The Bottleneck: Mark Zuckerberg has openly stated that energy availability, not chip supply, is now the biggest constraint on AI progress. By locking in nuclear power locally in Ohio, Meta ensures Prometheus won't trip the local grid.

Wall Street Reacts
The sheer scale of the announcement electrified the market.

Vistra (VST) and Oklo (OKLO) shares both surged over 15% in pre-market trading on Friday.

The Signal: Analysts view this as a validation of the "Small Modular Reactor" (SMR) thesis—the idea that factory-built, mini-reactors will power the future of tech.

"Meta just signaled that they are done waiting for the grid to catch up," said an energy analyst. "They are effectively building their own utility company to ensure their AI doesn't starve."
