Sr. Designer - Data Experimentation and AI: Kraken

Jan 30, 2026   |   Location: United States (Remote)   |   Deadline: Not specified

Experience: Senior

Continent: North America

Salary: $110,000 – $220,000 Base + Equity + Bonus

This is not a traditional "UI/UX" role where you focus purely on aesthetics or user flows. This is a Growth Design role.

In most companies, Product Managers own the metrics and Designers own the visuals. At Kraken, this role merges the two. You are being hired to move numbers—specifically Conversion, Activation, and Retention. You will be designing the "levers" that the business pulls to grow (e.g., optimizing the "Buy Crypto" flow, testing new onboarding incentives, or designing AI-driven trading assistants).

Key Responsibilities
The Scientist-Designer: You will spend as much time looking at data dashboards as you do in Figma. Your design process starts with a hypothesis ("If we change the placement of the 'Stake' button, retention will go up by X%") and ends with an A/B test result.

AI User Experience: You aren't coding AI, but you are defining how users interact with it. In crypto, trust is everything. If an AI suggests a trade, how do you design the UI so the user trusts it but also understands the risks?

Rapid Iteration: This is not about spending 3 months perfecting a pixel-perfect mockup. It’s about "Balance speed and rigor." You need to prototype fast, ship, learn, and kill the features that don't work.

Strategic Analysis: The "Kraken" Factor
The Culture Filter: Kraken is famous (and sometimes controversial) for its explicitly "Libertarian/Cypherpunk" culture. They prioritize "merit over inclusion" and "thick skin." They expect you to handle direct, blunt feedback without taking it personally. If you prefer a consensus-driven, highly sensitive environment, this role will likely be a culture shock.

The "Data" Requirement: Most designers say they are "data-informed." This role requires you to be data-literate. You need to understand statistical significance. If an A/B test is "green" but the sample size is too small, you need to be the one to catch that, not just the Data Scientist.

The AI Pivot: Crypto exchanges are racing to integrate AI agents (bots that trade for you or analyze the market). Designing the interface for an autonomous agent is a frontier design challenge. You are defining patterns that don't exist yet.

Candidate Profile
The "Full-Stack" Designer: You can do the UX research, the high-fidelity UI, and the interactive prototype.

The Growth Hacker: You have a portfolio that shows "Before and After" metrics. (e.g., "I changed the signup flow and reduced drop-off by 15%").

The HODLer: You don't need to be a crypto expert, but you need to understand the psychology of a trader. Why does someone panic sell? Why do they FOMO buy? You are designing for these emotional states.

Portfolio Advice
For this specific application, visual polish is secondary to logical rigor.

Don't just show pretty screens.

Do show: "The Problem -> The Hypothesis -> The Experiment -> The Data Result -> The Iteration."

Bonus: Show a failed experiment. Kraken values intellectual honesty. Showing that you tested something, it failed, and you learned why is often more impressive than a generic success story.
