Salary: $166,000 - $244,000 USD per year (plus bonus, equity, and benefits)

Google DeepMind is hiring a Research Scientist for its Sociotechnical Analysis of Model Behavior (SAMBA) team within the Responsible Research Group (R2). In this role, you will conduct cutting-edge research on AI model behaviors that impact people and society.

You will be responsible for designing experiments, developing measures to characterize model properties relevant to Responsibility and Safety, and creating tools to measure the societal impact of AI. This is an interdisciplinary role where you will collaborate closely with other Research Scientists and Research Engineers to build and apply frontier evaluations and publish the results.

Key Responsibilities:
Identify new research areas and questions related to AI's societal impact.

Design and conduct research and experiments to understand model behavior.

Develop and test new metrics and measures for AI evaluation.

Perform data analysis to synthesize and visualize research findings.

Lead the writing of results for research publications.

Communicate findings to non-technical audiences through presentations and briefs.

Qualifications & Experience:
Education & Research: A history of high-impact research, typically demonstrated by a PhD and/or a strong publication record in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Economics, Computational Social Science, Data Science, Political Science).

Technical Skills: Proficiency in programming languages like R or Python (including libraries like Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn).

Analytical Skills: A solid understanding of statistical concepts and the ability to perform data analysis and visualization.

AI Interest: Experience with or a demonstrated interest in AI evaluation.

Communication: Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to present findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Adaptability: Comfortable working in a fast-paced research environment.
