Research Engineer, Pre-training: Anthropic

Anthropic, a leading AI safety and research company with the mission to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems, is hiring a Research Engineer to join its Pre-training team. This team is responsible for developing the next generation of large language models.

This role is at the intersection of cutting-edge research and practical engineering. You will contribute to the entire stack, from low-level optimizations to high-level model design, while working to advance the understanding of large language models. You will be part of a single, cohesive team pursuing large-scale AI research projects that prioritize safety and ethics.

Key Responsibilities:
Conduct research and implement solutions in areas such as model architecture, algorithms, data processing, and optimizer development.

Design, run, and analyze scientific experiments to advance the understanding of large language models.

Optimize and scale training infrastructure to improve efficiency and reliability, including scaling jobs to thousands of GPUs.

Independently lead small research projects while collaborating with team members on larger initiatives.

Develop and improve internal tooling to enhance team productivity.

Required Qualifications:
Education: An advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.

Skills:

Strong software engineering skills with a proven track record of building complex systems.

Expertise in Python and experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch preferred).

Familiarity with large-scale machine learning, particularly in the context of language models.

Strong problem-solving skills and a results-oriented mindset.

Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Experience:
Work on high-performance, large-scale ML systems.

Familiarity with GPUs, Kubernetes, and OS internals.

Experience with language modeling using transformer architectures.

Knowledge of reinforcement learning techniques and large-scale ETL processes.
