Metagov is seeking a Public AI Fellow to support research and relationship-building for Canada's national AI strategy and ecosystem. This role is crucial for laying the groundwork for Airbus for AI, an ambitious initiative aimed at building a frontier AI lab across middle-power countries. The position offers a unique chance to shape Canada's role in a high-level international initiative and gain a front-row seat to global AI diplomacy and infrastructure strategy, working with a powerful network of international technologists, policymakers, and public interest organizations.
Responsibilities
As a Public AI Fellow, you will:
Build on existing research to prepare an actionable strategy memo covering Canada's AI strategy, with a special focus on private national champions (e.g., Cohere) and public national labs (e.g., Mila, Amii).
Build trust and support relationship development across Canada's public sector, national R&D labs, and AI industry.
Help align Canadian interests with a broader international coalition focused on public AI.
Provide political advice to support consortium-building efforts.
Work closely with senior fellow Jake Hirsch-Allen, research director Nick Vincent, and other members of the Canadian team.
Requirements
Existing connections or leadership within Canada's AI industry, startup, or open-source community.
Familiarity with Canada's tech, policy, and/or research communities, or the social intelligence to engage with and grow such a network.
A keen interest in AI, geopolitics, public infrastructure, or the future of technology governance.
Bonus experience in diplomacy, international tech collaborations, foundation models, or national AI strategies of Canada or other G7 countries.
