Machine Learning Engineer at Neuralink
Jan 6, 2026 |
Location: Fremont, California |
Deadline: Not specified
Experience: Mid
Continent: North America
Salary: $199,000 β $331,000 USD + RSUs
Role Overview
Neuralink is developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to connect humans and computers. As a Machine Learning Engineer on the BCI team, you will build the "encoders" and "decoders" that translate neural activity into digital actions (like moving a cursor) and digital information back into neural signals (to restore sight). You will work directly on the Telepathy (motor control) and Blindsight (vision restoration) products.
Key Responsibilities
Neural Decoding: Develop models to help paralyzed users type at high speeds (target: 35 words per minute) or control robotic limbs.
Neural Encoding: Formulate algorithms to project visual data into the visual cortex to restore sight.
Signal Processing: Write high-performance code in C/C++ or Rust to process raw neural signals in real-time.
Hardware Influence: Use data insights to inform the design of custom in-house ASICs and thin-film arrays.
Qualifications
Technical Skills: Expert proficiency in Python and a low-level language (C, C++, or Rust).
Experience: A track record of shipping production-level real-time ML products.
Education: Bachelorβs degree in a relevant field (CS, EE, BioE) or equivalent experience.
Knowledge: Deep understanding of signal processing and algorithms. (Note: Neuroscience knowledge is not required).
Workforce Diversity & Representation
Neuralink is a private company and does not publicly release a detailed annual diversity report. However, based on the 2024-2025 industry benchmarks for high-tech hardware and neurotech firms in the San Francisco Bay Area, the demographic makeup of engineering teams in this sector is as follows:
Estimated Technical Workforce Demographics (Silicon Valley Hardware/ML Sector):
Asian: 48.2%
White: 36.5%
Hispanic / Latino: 7.1%
Black / African American: 3.4%
Two or More Races / Other: 4.8%
Gender Representation in Engineering:
Men: 76%
Women: 24%
Disability Representation: As a federal contractor, Neuralink follows Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act, which sets a national utilization goal of 7% for the employment of qualified individuals with disabilities. The application explicitly includes a voluntary self-identification form to track progress toward this goal.
Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary: $199K β $331K based on skill and experience.
Equity: All full-time employees receive Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
Health: PPO plans for medical, dental, and vision.
Perks: Daily meals provided, commuter benefits, and flexible time off.
Retirement: 401(k) plan with eligibility after 1,000 hours for interns.
Application Requirement Note
Neuralink requires a specific writing sample in the application:
"Please provide 1 example highlighting your exceptional ability... start with an action word (e.g., built, led, launched)... capture the problem, solution, and result."
