Language Engineer: Microsoft AI

Microsoft is hiring a Language Engineer to join its newly formed Microsoft AI (MAI) organization, specifically working on the Copilot team. This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of improving the language capabilities of a leading personal AI.

The Language Engineer will collaborate with a diverse team of data scientists, AI researchers, engineers, and designers to identify issues, define policies, and enhance the Large Language Models (LLMs) that power Copilot. Your work will directly influence the product roadmap and user experience for millions of people.

Key Responsibilities:
Extract insights from language datasets to identify issues and opportunities for improvement.

Create structured classifications and categorizations for language data.

Design training materials and guidelines for data labelers to ensure high-quality data collection.

Craft and refine prompts for training and evaluating AI models.

Use metrics and analytics to influence the Copilot product roadmap and share insights in weekly product reviews.

Collaborate closely with product managers and engineers to integrate language improvements.

Qualifications & Experience:
Required:

A Bachelor’s Degree AND 2+ years of experience in fields like linguistics, computer science, writing, editing, education, or library science (or equivalent experience/research).

Preferred:

5+ years of relevant experience.

Familiarity with scripting or query languages (e.g., Python, SQL).

Experience with Machine Learning or Large Language Models.

Proficiency in a language other than English.

Exceptional communication and public speaking skills.

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
