The Role
This is a high-level technical and strategic role. You will serve as a senior authority on Artificial Intelligence, data engineering, and emerging technologies. The position ranges from hands-on execution at the lower grades to high-level policy formulation and interagency representation at the higher grades.

Key Duties (GS-15 Level Focus):

Strategic Leadership: Formulate enterprise-wide engineering strategies for AI-enabled systems, ensuring compliance with federal mandates and Executive Orders.

Standards & Policy: Establish government-wide technical standards and architectures for the ethical and secure use of AI.

Representation: Represent the Treasury in interagency councils and international forums regarding AI standards.

Modernization: Direct enterprise cloud-native modernization efforts and hardware/software integration.

Qualification Requirements (Education)
This position is in the 0854 Computer Engineering series, which has very strict educational requirements. You cannot qualify based on experience alone; you must meet specific academic standards.

You must meet ONE of the following distinct paths:

Path A: The Standard Engineering Degree You have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a school with at least one program accredited by ABET.

Path B: The Coursework Option You have a degree in a related field (like Computer Science, Physics, or Mathematics) AND your coursework included differential and integral calculus PLUS courses in five of the following seven areas:

Statics/Dynamics

Strength of Materials

Fluid Mechanics/Hydraulics

Thermodynamics

Electrical Fields and Circuits

Nature and Properties of Materials

Other fundamental engineering science (optics, heat transfer, etc.)

Path C: The License/Exam Option You have a related degree (Computer Science, Math, etc.) AND one of the following:

Current Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.

1 year of professional engineering experience under the supervision of a professional engineer.

Experience Requirements by Grade
You must demonstrate one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

GS-12 Level:

Assisting in designing, developing, testing, or deploying AI models and prototypes.

GS-13 Level:

Applying cybersecurity practices in AI and cloud environments.

Participating in Agile development teams (sprint planning/execution).

GS-14 Level:

Collaborating with senior management to align technology adoption with leadership priorities.

Conducting cybersecurity risk assessments for AI-enabled systems.

GS-15 Level:

Directing cross-agency projects.

Leading enterprise cloud-native modernization efforts.

Advising high-ranking officials on AI, cloud, and data initiatives to influence Department-wide adoption.
