This role supports the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the Integrated Research Facility (IRF) in Frederick, MD. The position focuses on using artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze imaging data in support of research on infectious diseases and high-consequence viral pathogens.

Key Responsibilities
AI/ML Development: Develop, train, and validate machine learning and deep learning models for image segmentation, feature extraction, and quantification.

Imaging Analysis: Analyze and interpret imaging data from various modalities to support research on select agent viruses.

Algorithm Innovation: Collaborate with imaging teams to design new algorithms or modify existing ones to improve analysis accuracy and efficiency.

Logistics & Coordination: Coordinate with imaging scientists for data acquisition and ensure data meets specific scientific objectives.

Laboratory Operations: Work within a BSL4 (Biosafety Level 4) environment, ensuring strict compliance with all safety protocols.

Scientific Dissemination: Publish research results in peer-reviewed national and international journals and provide regular written progress updates.

Mentorship: May direct day-to-day scientific functions, provide guidance on experimental design, and resolve technical problems.

Qualifications
Education: Ph.D. or Master's degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a related field with a focus on AI, ML, or image processing.

Technical Skills: * Proficiency in Python, R, or MATLAB.

Experience with deep learning frameworks: TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras.

Expertise in image processing libraries: OpenCV or ITK-SNAP.

Knowledge of MONAI, nnUNet, and automated image processing pipelines.

Systems & Tools: Expert knowledge of high-performance computing environments (SLURM), GitHub repositories, and MLOps.

Domain Experience: Experience working with biomedical imaging data is highly desired.

Laboratory Experience: Experience in BSL3 or higher laboratory environments is highly desirable.

Clearance: Ability to obtain a Tier 3 (Public Trust) clearance is required.

Physical Requirements
Ability to lift or carry up to 50 pounds and push/pull more than 45 pounds.

Ability to reach above shoulder level and use both hands for repetitive activities.

Ability to stand or walk for extended periods, bend repeatedly, kneel, crawl, and climb.

Must have depth perception, correctable near vision, and the ability to distinguish basic colors.
