Role Overview
This is a senior-level position within the Department of the Treasury’s Chief Information Officer (CIO) branch. As an Artificial Intelligence Engineer, you will serve as a technical authority, applying AI, computer engineering, and data engineering to modernize the Treasury’s enterprise systems. This role is a "Direct-Hire" authority position, focusing on the ethical and secure adoption of emerging digital technologies.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Authority: Represent the Treasury in interagency councils, technical standards bodies, and international forums regarding AI and computer engineering.
Policy & Standards: Establish government-wide technical standards and engineering policies for the ethical, secure, and trustworthy use of AI.
Enterprise Strategy: Formulate and direct engineering strategies for AI-enabled systems, integrating hardware/software and cloud-native architectures.
Modernization: Lead enterprise-wide modernization efforts to ensure compliance with federal mandates and Executive Orders on AI.
Qualifications & Requirements
Basic Requirements (Individual Occupational Requirement)
You must have a Degree in Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must:
Be from an ABET-accredited school of engineering; OR
Include differential and integral calculus and advanced courses in at least five areas of engineering science (e.g., statics, thermodynamics, electrical circuits, etc.). Note: A combination of education and experience (like a Physics or Computer Science degree + 1 year of professional engineering experience under supervision) may also qualify.
Specialized Experience (By Grade Level)
GS-15: Must have experience directing cross-agency projects, leading enterprise cloud modernization, and advising high-ranking officials on AI initiatives.
GS-14: Experience conducting cybersecurity risk assessments for AI-enabled systems and aligning technology adoption with leadership priorities.
GS-13: Experience applying cybersecurity practices in AI/cloud environments and participating in Agile development teams.
GS-12: Experience assisting in the design, development, testing, or deployment of AI models and prototypes.
Conditions of Employment
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
Background: Must successfully complete a Public Trust background investigation and enrollment in "Continuous Vetting."
Ethics: Review of financial interests may be required to prevent conflicts of interest.
Probation: New hires are subject to a probationary or trial period.
