Facebook Marketplace Gets New Collaborative and Social Features, Meta AI Integrations

Meta is rolling out a major update for Facebook Marketplace, transforming it from a simple classifieds-style listing service into a more social, collaborative, and intelligent shopping experience. The new features include Pinterest-like "Collections," the ability to add friends to seller chats, and new integrations with Meta AI to assist buyers.

The updates are part of a significant push to make the platform more appealing to young adults, who Meta says are one of the most active demographics on Marketplace.

"Shop Together" with Collaborative Tools
The most significant social change is the introduction of new collaborative features designed to mimic shopping with friends.

First, Marketplace is launching "Collections," which allows users to group listings they are interested in, similar to a Pinterest board. Users can create a collection for a specific project, like "New Apartment Decor," make it public or private, and then invite friends to join. Collaborators can view and comment on the saved listings, and the collection can be shared via Facebook Feed, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Second, Meta is testing a "collaborative buying" feature. This allows a user to invite a friend or family member directly into their private chat with a seller. This is designed to streamline coordination for tasks like negotiating a price, getting a second opinion, or arranging a pickup time for a large item like a sofa.

In addition to these collaborative tools, Marketplace is becoming more social by allowing users to react and comment directly on listings, a feature previously not available. This adds a layer of public feedback and social proof to items for sale.

Meta AI Enters the Marketplace
Artificial intelligence is being deeply integrated to assist both buyers and sellers.

When a user starts a chat with a seller, a new button for "Suggested questions to ask" will appear. Tapping this prompts Meta AI to analyze the listing's details and the conversation context to generate relevant questions a buyer might not have thought to ask, such as questions about an item's condition or availability.

Furthermore, for car listings—one of the most popular categories for young adults—Marketplace is testing AI-powered insights. This feature will automatically compile a summary of a vehicle's key information, such as engine options, safety ratings, transmission type, reviews, and price insights, all in one place to simplify the research process.

Finally, Meta also announced an improved checkout experience that shows the total cost, including shipping and tax, upfront for shipped items, and is integrating inventory from partners like eBay and Poshmark to expand the selection of goods available.
