In a characteristic blend of industrial ambition and internet humor, Elon Musk has announced the acquisition of a massive third facility for his xAI "Colossus" supercomputer project. The expansion, confirmed by Musk late this week, is set to push the company's total AI training capacity to a staggering 2 gigawatts (GW)—an amount of electricity roughly equivalent to the consumption of 1.5 million homes.



The new building, which Musk has playfully named "MACROHARDRR" (a jab at rival Microsoft, often mockingly called "Macrohard" in tech circles), sits just across the state line in Southaven, Mississippi, directly adjacent to the existing Colossus complex.

The 2-Gigawatt Ambition
This acquisition marks a pivotal moment in the "AI Arms Race," as xAI attempts to physically outbuild competitors like Google and OpenAI.

The Scale: The new facility will integrate with the current Memphis site to form a contiguous "compute campus." Musk stated on X (formerly Twitter) that the addition will bring xAI's total training power to "almost 2GW."


The Hardware: The expansion is designed to house a significant portion of xAI's target fleet of 1 million GPUs. Specifically, it will support the ongoing build-out of "Colossus 2," which aims to deploy over 550,000 Nvidia H100 and Blackwell chips.


Timeline: Reports indicate that conversion of the newly acquired 810,000-square-foot warehouse into a data center will begin in early 2026.

"Macrohardrr" and the Power Problem
The choice of location is strategic, driven not just by space but by the desperate need for electricity.

Energy Strategy: The new Mississippi site is located near a natural gas power plant that xAI is reportedly constructing to ensure a steady supply of energy, bypassing the strained public grids that plague other tech hubs like Northern Virginia.

Environmental Concerns: The sheer scale of the project has drawn sharp criticism from local environmental groups and federal watchdogs. Operating a 2GW cluster requires not only massive power but also millions of gallons of water daily for cooling—a resource xAI plans to manage via a new $80 million wastewater treatment plant.


The "Sovereign" AI Stack
Musk’s move reinforces his strategy of vertical integration. Unlike OpenAI, which relies heavily on Microsoft’s Azure cloud (and thus Microsoft’s data centers), xAI is building its own physical infrastructure from the ground up.

"We are not renting the future; we are building it," said a source close to the xAI infrastructure team. "MACROHARDRR is proof that we intend to own the metal."
